Today I was supposed to run my goal race of the Baltimore Half Marathon. I decided that I was going to run the race again because we had moved back to Maryland and it was one of my favs. Then my foot issues started.
Like any other runner, I was like “It’s cool. It will be fine by October”. I kept saying it over and over again. Until the week was upon us and I knew it wasn’t going to happen. I knew because every time I started running about a mile into it my ankle started hurting. Then, as I was doing the #last90days I heard them say “you have to walk before you run” and it dawned on me.
My foot was hurting because I took 4 months off from running and I was trying to go back to running 3+ miles at the drop of a hat. I knew what I needed to do. I needed to become a beginner again.
Last week, I asked the Garmin coach to set up training for a 5K. Last night I walked 10 minutes, did 2 cadence drills for 20 sec, and walked 10 minutes. I have to walk before I can run. I need to rebuild those muscles that I lost over the last few months. It’s a mentally challenging concept but I think it is the answer to get back to pain free running.
